An Amazing Week of Appreciation!

What an amazing Teacher Appreciation Week! Flowers, cards, favorite colors, yummy treats, positive bucket drops, and lots of smiles filled the hallways and classrooms!  Thank you to everyone who made this week so special for our teachers and staff. We appreciate your thoughtfulness, your generosity, and your sincere recognition of the hard work and dedication they bring to Bull Run each day as they work with your children to help be successful and meet their potential. Thank you to the PTA parents for the extraordinary luncheon on Monday afternoon – it was so delicious! Thank you for the daily gestures of gratitude – our teachers were so moved by the children’s joy in bringing them little gifts of thanks. Parents and students made this week something wonderful for the Bull Run staff, and we thank you. The Bull Run community is, indeed, a remarkable group of people!

The Sound of Music!

Bull Run was represented by 27 talented Strings students at the Solo and Ensemble Festival that was held recently at Stone Middle School. These students performed for judges.  All of the Bull Run Strings students received ratings of Excellent or Superior!  Here’s a sample of their fine talent! (Click on the picture to view the video.)

This has been a busy month for our Music Department.  Last Saturday, twelve of our students performed at the All County Choral Festival at Hayfield Secondary.  It was an amazing experience to witness, with more than 900 students all coming together to work toward a common goal and see their efforts manifest in a beautiful symphony of voices. This week, our chorus took us for A Walk down the Broadway Beat, singing an ensemble of songs that had the audience whistling and tapping their feet! My personal favorite was the final number, which took me back to my high school days and my favorite movie, Grease!    Our band also performed their spring concert, playing a variety of pieces, ending with an all time favorite – Let’s Go Band!  That’s not the end of it, though.  Today, our orchestra put the finishing touches on our spring music concert series, delivering a noteworthy performance for all to enjoy.  We are so proud of our students for putting in all of those hours of practice to produce such masterful performances.  Indeed, these students are discovering their passion and honing their talent!  Thank you to our fine music teachers for their commitment to the students and their program and to the parents for unending support at home!

In the Dark about Plant Growth

Fourth graders are getting their hands dirty, experimenting with plant growth, using Experimental Design.  They just planted radish seeds, and now they’re gathering data each day as they observe their plants.  They have half of the plants in the sunlight while the other half are in a cubby in the dark.  Talk it out!  What’s the independent variable?  What’s the dependent variable? These pictures capture the enthusiasm and student engagement!

Happy Earth Day!

Bull Run celebrated Earth Day on Friday!  Part of the celebration included wearing green or blue and going paperless for the entire day.  Classes went out to the blacktop to do chalk talk, writing and drawing their reflections about Earth Day and how to protect our planet.  We closed out the day with a schoolwide Drop Everything and Read period.  When asked, “Why do you think Earth Day is important?”; one student responded, “So we can learn how to take care of our environment.”  Another student said, “So we can have a safe place to live.”  It was exciting to see everyone gathering together outside to show appreciation for our planet and share ideas about how to preserve it.

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

NASA’s Space Shuttle Discovery Flies over Bull Run!

Discovery’s final flight ….what a sight to take in!

Did you know that Discovery blasted into space 39 times?!  That’s more than any other NASA spacecraft!  It’s now being retired to the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly.  I can’t wait to go and visit to get an even closer look!
